The Building Design process begins with the Design Phase.  This phase is started by an initial meeting between myself and the client.  At this time we will work through a client worksheet that outlines, room-by-room, what you desire in your home.  The completed worksheet will develop the program for the design of your new home, addition, or home renovation.

If you have your own sketch that you have created, that too will become part of the program.  Any sketch developed by the client is a great tool to be used for the design of your new home.  Client sketches provide a clear understanding of what is desired and expected in your new home.  If do not have your own sketches, that is fine as well.  I am fully comfortable deriving floor plans and elevations based solely on our conversations.

If you have a builder in mind to build your new home, I encourage you to invite him or her to the meetings.  The builder's input is very important, and it is helpful if they are a part of the project from the start.

After the initial meeting, I will develop a set of Design Sketches derived from the program established in our meeting.  The Design Sketches are made up of a front elevation and floor plans drawn at a scale of 1/8” = 1’-0”.  In addition, the Design Sketches include a site study, drawn at a scale of 1”=30’, that shows how the house will be oriented on the site.

During the Design Phase, it is critical to focus on the concept of your home.  Most of the minor but important details are brought out in the next phase.  Once you receive your sketches, we will meet again to review any design adjustments you desire.  Once you are comfortable with the concept of your home design, the project will then move to the Preliminary Drawing Phase.
